Valentine’s Day for secrets
In my memory of the Valentine’s Day, it is a
day for secrets.
My mother is a crazy flower lover, and the
ideal house in her mind is the one where flowers can be found almost everywhere.
And my father extremely loves wines,
especially red wines. However, my family was not rich at that time, so both of
them were very mean to themselves and seldom bought their favorite for
themselves.
It was the Valentine’s Day when I was nine
years old. In the early morning, when my mother was going to market, my father
asked me in privately, ”Sweetheart, would you like go out with me to get
something for your mother?” Drove by my curiosity, I replied without any
hesitation, “Sure, daddy.” “But there is a condition that you can’t mention
anything to your mother, and keep it a secret between you and me, OK?” my
father said seriously. “OK, I promise!” Then my father drove me to a beautiful
flower shop, and this was the first time I came to a flower shop. It seemed like
a heaven, and I totally understood why my mother loved flowers so much. I was
watching and talking with each different kind of flowers, while my father was
selecting flowers. After a careful selection, my father decided to buy red roses.
But he was a little confused that how many should he buy. So he turned to me
for help. “My baby, how many roses do you like?” my father asked. Thinking for
a while, I answered “Nine, ha-ha, because I am nine years old now!” My father
burst into laughter, and finally I held nine roses back home. When we were back
home, my mother still didn’t come back. My father felt confused again because
he couldn’t find a nice place to hide his roses. Finally, he put them in my
table drawer.
Later, my mother was back, and began to prepare
the lunch for us. I was a little bored, so I ran to the kitchen to help my
mother wash some vegetables and fruits. And I realized that the lunch for today
was much better than any day else. So I asked my mother whether today was
someone’s birthday. She responded happily that it was a secret. A few minutes
later, my mother asked my father to buy some salt for her. Seeing my father
going out, my mother took out a pretty nice red wine. Then she asked to hide it
in my table drawer and told me not to tell anything to my father. “My baby,
it’s a secret between you and me!” she said with a bright smile in face. Of
course, I nodded my head.
When it was time to have lunch, my father
advised to pause for a while, and told my mother that there was a surprise for
her. Then he asked me to take out the roses to my mother. I still remembered
how excited and touched my mother is, and she held the flowers with the
brightest smile. “I also get something for you, baby, could you bring it to
your father?” my mom looked at me. So I ran to the table drawer again, and took
the red wine out. When seeing the gift, my father was so surprised that he
couldn’t say anything. They stared at each other, as if I was invisible. Ha-ha…
Since then, I keep it in mind that the
Valentine’s Day is for lovers to keep secrets between each other and wait for a
certain time in the day with patience to surprise each other.
